Each year 31,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer. Yet many people are unaware of the need for oral cancer screening and regular dental exams. Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth, but usually appears under the tongue or on the lower lip. The incidences of oral cancer increase with age. Smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco and alcohol use are two ways to greatly increase your risk.

• a persistent sore or irritation that does not heal

• the development of red and/or white lesions

• pain, tenderness or numbness anywhere in the mouth or lips

• a lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area

• difficulty in chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue

• a change in bite. Periodic oral examinations are essential to maintaining good health.

During a dental examination, we routinely screen for precancerous changes in your mouth, thus helping to detect cancer at an early stage when it can be most successfully treated. Please schedule an appointment for a dental examination. We want to help you eliminate your risk factors and maintain your oral health.
